‘Bangabhaban’ office cum residence of the Honorable President of Bangladesh, symbolizes the dignity and glory of the nation. Bangabhaban has a rich century old history. During the British rule, on September 1, 1905, when a new province was formed in East Bengal and Assam, the journey of Bangabhaban started as office and residence of the lieutenant governor, the then chief governor of the domiciled province. It was named ‘Government House’.
When the state of Pakistan was born on August 14, 1947, British built ‘Government House’ was selected as the office and residence of the new provincial governor. At that time, the government house was renamed as ‘Governor House’. On March 26, 1971, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence. An independent sovereign Bangladesh is created.
After long nine months of the liberation war, victory came on December 16, 1971. Acting President Syed Nazrul Islam, Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed and other members of the cabinet held a cabinet meeting on December 23, 1971 in the Governor House. In that meeting, the governor’s house has been renamed ‘Bangabhaban’. As emblem of glory and honor, Bangabhaban symbolizes hopes and aspiration of the nation.
Honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh exercises his power given by the constitution. In addition to the constitutional responsibilities, he attends different state, ceremonial, educational, social and cultural events. He appoints Prime Minister, Members of the Cabinet, Chief Justice, Justice, Attorney General and others in the constitutional bodies. Moreover he summons the Parliament. Honorable President is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces (Supreme Command) and the Chancellor of all the universities. Ambassadors to Bangladesh present their Credentials to the Honorable President. On national day, the Honorable President delivers his message to the nation and arranges reception in Bangabhaban.
The historic darbar hall is inside the main building of Bangabhaban. The President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice and the Cabinet members take oath in this Darbar hall. The banquet is organized here in honor of foreign heads of state during their visit to Bangladesh. Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha, Janmastami, Durgapuja, Buddha Purnima, Christmas, Bangla New Year, social, cultural and family events held at this Darbar Hall. The historic Darbar Hall symbolizes the tradition of Bangabhaban.
To provide full support to the Honorable President, there are two Divisions in the President’s Office namely the Public Division and the Personal Division. Secretary of the President’s Office and Military Secretary to the President lead these two Divisions. Bangabhaban is an integral part of our history and tradition.
